WHO IS DUYGUN YARSUVAT?

Professor Dr. Duygun Yarsuvat was born on 18 August 1937 in Istanbul.

After completing his secondary education in Istanbul, Galatasaray High School (1948-1957), he graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Law in 1961. The same year, he was appointed as an assistant to Istanbul University Faculty of Law. He started his graduate studies at Istanbul University Faculty of Law. In 1964, Brussels Institute of Mass Communication Tools; He continued at Princeton University in America in 1966. In 1966, he received the title of “doctor of law” with his thesis titled “Freedom of Meetings and Demonstrations and Related Penal Provisions”. In 1971, his Associate Professor thesis named “Traffic Crimes Criminology” was accepted by the jury unanimously and was promoted to the rank of “Associate Professor” at the same University. In 1978, his professorship thesis titled “Labor Criminal Law” was accepted by Istanbul University and he was given the title of “professor”.

In Comparative Law at Columbia University, USA in 1967; It continued in Switzerland in 1978 under the Geneva International Labor Organization.

During his tenure at Istanbul University Faculty of Law and Faculty of Political Sciences between 1971-1997, he gave lectures on Criminal Law, Criminology and Criminal Procedure Law. His courses include human rights law, intellectual property law, press law and informatics law in addition to criminology, criminal law and criminal procedure law. Between 1983 and 1986, he lectured on Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law as a visiting professor at Marmara University Faculty of Law. He started to work as a faculty member at Galatasaray University Faculty of Law in 1997, and continued his courses on Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law at this University until 2008.

Professor Yarsuvat was a member of the Turkish Penal Code Preparation Commission between 1987-1988 and 1996-1997. Between 1988 and 1992, he was elected to the Scientific Criminological Council of the Council of Europe Crime Problems Committee and served as a member of this committee for 4 years.

In addition to his academic studies, Duygun Yarsuvat has also undertaken administrative duties. Between 1983-1997, he served as a Senate Member and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Istanbul Faculty of Political Sciences.

In 1997, he became a lecturer at Galatasaray University. Professor Yarsuvat, who served as the Dean and Vice Rector of the Faculty of Law at Galatasaray University between 2001-2004, was elected the Rector of Galatasaray University in 2004 (2004-2008).

Professor Yarsuvat is a founding member of the Turkish Criminal Law Association until the present year; In the International Criminal Law Association, he is a member of the Board of Directors.

Professor Yarsuvat is still working as a faculty member at Yeditepe University. He teaches criminal procedure and criminal law courses to undergraduate and graduate students at Yeditepe University Faculty of Law. Professor Dr. Duygun Yarsuvat has more than one scientific book and dozens of articles in Turkish, French and English.

He is a member of organizations named “Association Internationale des Criminologues de Langue Française”, “Association International de Droit Penal (AIDP)”, “Fondation Internationale Pénale et Pénitentiaire”, Turkish Criminal Law Association.
